Mungkin banyak yang sudah dengar tentang buku The Shock Doctrine, buku laris karangan perempuan aktivis Kanada, Naomi Klein, yang membongkar habis teori kapitalisme yang dinilai tidak bertanggung jawab dan berpotensi membawa bencana.
Apalagi dengan adanya krisis finansial dunia sekarang ini, prediksi yang ada dalam buku The Shock Doctrine mulai menjadi kenyataan. Karena saya kurang tertarik dengan masalah ekonomi, ketika buku ini menjadi pembicaraan banyak orang, saya hanya menjadi pendengar yang baik, tetapi tidak terpanggil untuk memiliki dan membacanya. Namun, ketika Michael Winterbottom, sutradara Inggris (Jude, A Mighty Heart, Road To Guantanamo), membuat film dokumenter dengan judul sama, dengan Naomi Klein sebagai tokoh protagonis di dalamnya dan diputar di Berlin pula, saya dan tiga sineas Indonesia rela mengantre panjang masuk bioskop.
Film diawali dengan adegan hitam putih, di sebuah rumah sakit jiwa, dengan pasien yang sedang mengalami terapi kejut (shock therapy) menggunakan setruman listrik. Penonton dibuat bergidik dan dipersiapkan untuk masuk ke sosok ekonom yang terkenal dengan teori free-market yang sangat agresif, Milton Friedman.
Adegan-adegan bergulir selama hampir dua jam dengan mengombinasikan gambar-gambar dari arsip film hitam putih, arsip film berwarna yang sudah pudar, sampai gambar yang diambil sang sutradara pada era sekarang yang berwarna kinclong. Intinya: film ini berpihak kepada para korban kapitalisme agresif yang mengatasnamakan demokrasi, tetapi ujungnya hanya menguntungkan penguasa yang diktator. Kita diajak melihat dan membandingkan kejadian-kejadian 40 tahun terakhir di negara-negara AS, Inggris, Cile, Argentina.
Film ini baru selesai diedit sehari sebelum pemutaran di Berlin dan kelihatannya untuk penayangan resmi di bioskop-bioskop dunia masih akan melewati beberapa tahap pengeditan untuk melancarkan struktur cerita. Kami, yang tidak mengerti apa-apa tentang teori ekonomi, dapat merasakan emosi dan nalar dari inti cerita yang ingin disampaikan pembuatnya. Bahwa sudah saatnya yang berkuasa memberhentikan agresi-agresi yang membuat dunia shock. Dan bagi kita yang tidak memegang kuasa, harus mau menolak agresi-agresi traumatis tersebut.
Semoga film ini akan sempat ditonton banyak orang, termasuk para pemimpin dunia, seperti Presiden Obama, Hillary Clinton, serta para pemimpin dan pembuat UU di negara kita.
Selesai menonton, kami hanya bisa geleng-geleng kepala. Ternyata lewat film, penjelasan dan teori-teori yang begitu rumit bisa dipahami dengan jelas. Lalu muncul pertanyaan: ”Kapan ya kita bisa membuat film di Indonesia seperti ini, wong arsip film nasional kita saja tak lengkap".
Bukan hanya soal arsip. Saya jadi ingat ketika seorang sahabat yang karya dokumenternya bicara tentang perjuangan mahasiswa saat reformasi dipotong sensor habis-habisan, bahkan diganti judulnya supaya bisa tayang karena takut menyinggung pihak penguasa. Kalau masih begini, sulitlah Indonesia punya pembuat film dokumenter sekaliber Michael Winterbottom….

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
